U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to hold a bilateral meeting on June 17 during the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Evian, France, with ongoing trade negotiations likely to take center stage. According to a senior White House official, the two leaders are set to review the progress made toward a proposed India-U.S. trade agreement and discuss the path forward for finalizing the deal.
The upcoming interaction will mark the first formal bilateral engagement between Trump and Modi since Operation Sindoor last year, an event that significantly influenced South Asia’s strategic environment. Their meeting is anticipated to address both economic cooperation and broader geopolitical developments affecting the region.
During a White House briefing ahead of President Trump’s visit to France, a senior administration official indicated that trade discussions would be a major topic of conversation. However, the official clarified that although both countries have made meaningful progress, a comprehensive agreement is unlikely to be finalized during the summit itself.
According to the administration, India and the United States have been engaged in extensive negotiations for several months following the signing of a joint framework agreement earlier this year. The official noted that talks have remained active at multiple levels, with delegations from both countries working to bridge outstanding differences and identify mutually beneficial outcomes.
As part of the continuing negotiations, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is expected to travel to India during the week of June 22 to participate in additional discussions aimed at moving the proposed agreement closer to completion. The visit reflects the commitment of both governments to maintaining momentum in the negotiating process.
While expressing confidence in the prospects of a successful outcome, the White House official emphasized that significant technical work still lies ahead. The administration reiterated President Trump’s position that any agreement must serve the interests of the United States while also creating long-term value for both nations. Officials believe that a balanced and effective deal remains achievable if negotiations continue constructively.
The G7 Summit meeting is expected to provide Trump and Modi with an opportunity to evaluate the current status of the trade talks and determine how aggressively both sides wish to pursue an agreement in the coming weeks. Their discussions could help establish the political direction necessary to support ongoing technical negotiations.
The White House also underscored the expanding economic relationship between India and the United States, describing the two democracies as natural partners with substantial untapped potential. Officials believe stronger commercial ties could unlock new opportunities for innovation, investment, and economic growth, benefiting businesses and consumers in both countries.
