Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with Norway’s highest civilian honour, the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, during his official visit to Oslo. The prestigious recognition marks a significant milestone in his diplomatic engagement with the Nordic country and stands as his 32nd international award.
The Grand Cross is the highest rank within the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit and is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions toward strengthening Norway’s interests and advancing international relations. The honour highlights the growing partnership between India and Norway, particularly in areas of diplomacy, trade, and global cooperation.
PM Modi received the award during his two-day state visit to Norway, which follows his earlier engagements in Sweden. The visit is being seen as a major step in strengthening India’s outreach to Nordic countries and expanding collaboration on global issues such as sustainability, innovation, and economic development.
A day before receiving the Norwegian honour, the Prime Minister was also awarded Sweden’s prestigious “Royal Order of the Polar Star, Commander Grand Cross,” which is one of the highest civilian recognitions given by Sweden to foreign heads of government. The award acknowledged his contributions toward enhancing bilateral relations and fostering long-term strategic cooperation.
Officials noted that PM Modi’s visit to Norway is the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 43 years, marking a historic moment in bilateral relations. The trip is also part of India’s broader diplomatic efforts to deepen ties with Europe’s Nordic region.
During the visit, discussions have focused on expanding cooperation in trade, clean energy, innovation, maritime industries, and the blue economy. Leaders from both sides have emphasized building a forward-looking partnership that supports sustainable growth and shared global priorities.
The recognition from Norway adds to a growing list of international honours received by the Indian Prime Minister, reflecting his expanding global diplomatic footprint. The award further reinforces India’s strengthening relations with Norway and its increasing engagement with European partners in key strategic sectors.
