Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a nationwide initiative aimed at creating a drug-free youth population, emphasizing that healthy and empowered young citizens are essential to achieving the vision of a developed India. Speaking during the virtual launch of the “Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan” on August 2, 2026, the Prime Minister called for collective efforts from communities, institutions, and citizens to address the growing challenge of drug abuse.
Modi stated that as India works toward becoming a developed nation, it is important for young people to maintain both physical and mental well-being by staying away from substance abuse. He highlighted that the youth of today will play a leading role in shaping India’s progress over the next two decades and will be responsible for guiding the country toward its 2047 development goals.
The campaign received support from more than 125 spiritual groups, public organizations, educational institutions, and industry associations. The initiative was carried out at over 28,000 locations nationwide, with participation from more than 10 million young people along with several state leaders, including Chief Ministers and Governors. Before the Prime Minister’s address, participants took a pledge to contribute toward building a drug-free India.
Modi explained that the campaign would continue for the next 100 weeks, with weekly activities every Sunday focusing on areas such as art, culture, sports, meditation, spirituality, and community service. These efforts aim to spread awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and encourage wider public participation in preventing drug addiction.
Addressing the youth, the Prime Minister noted their achievements in fields such as startups, artificial intelligence, sports, science, and space technology. He said India needs the creativity, energy, and determination of young people to drive future growth and innovation.
He warned that drug addiction affects not only individuals but also families and society as a whole. According to Modi, when a young person becomes trapped in substance abuse, it can destroy personal dreams, create family hardships, and weaken the nation’s overall strength. He also raised concerns about attempts by hostile forces to encourage drug networks as a way to harm the country.
The Prime Minister encouraged families to openly address addiction-related challenges instead of hiding them. He urged people struggling with substance abuse to seek professional support and highlighted the role of rehabilitation centers in helping individuals rebuild their lives. He said those who overcome addiction deserve respect and recognition for their determination.
Modi also pointed to government actions against drug trafficking, stating that authorities have increased enforcement efforts and seized narcotics worth billions of dollars. He expressed confidence that central and state governments would continue working together to strengthen the mission and protect young Indians from the dangers of drug abuse.
