Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated India’s latest Commonwealth Games 2026 medal winners after another successful day in Glasgow, recognizing their achievements and celebrating the country’s growing presence at the competition. India secured four more medals on Day 5, taking its overall tally to 10 and strengthening its campaign across multiple sporting disciplines.
In a series of messages shared on X, the Prime Minister applauded high jumper Sarvesh Kushare for capturing the silver medal in the men’s high jump. Modi praised the athlete’s determination and consistency, describing his performance as a proud moment for the country and wishing him continued success in future competitions.
Weightlifter Valluri Ajaya Babu also received congratulations after winning silver in the men’s 79-kilogram category. In addition to standing on the podium, the Indian lifter produced a standout performance by establishing a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch event. Modi commended both his medal-winning effort and his record-breaking achievement.
The Prime Minister reserved special praise for para athlete Sharmila Dhankar, whose gold medal in the women’s shot put F57 event created history for India. Her victory ended a two-decade wait for an Indian para athletics gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Modi highlighted the significance of the achievement, noting that Dhankar also registered her season’s best throw during the competition.
Shilpa Kanchugarakoppalu Shyla was also recognized after claiming the bronze medal in the same event. Her podium finish came with a personal best throw and was confirmed after the event standings changed following a competitor’s disqualification. Modi described her performance as an impressive accomplishment and applauded her determination.
India’s fifth day in Glasgow proved to be one of its strongest so far. Along with the medals won by Dhankar, Shyla, Kushare and Ajaya Babu, the country continued to build momentum in several sports. Weightlifting remained one of India’s most productive events, with additional podium finishes from Gyaneshwari Yadav and Bindyarani Devi.
Indian athletes also advanced in boxing and swimming, although a handful of competitors bowed out of their respective events. By the end of Day 5, India’s medal count stood at two gold, five silver and three bronze medals, reflecting a well-rounded performance across athletics, para sports and weightlifting as the Commonwealth Games continue in Glasgow.
