Indian American physician-scientist Dr. Ravi Thadhani has been selected as Cedars-Sinai’s first executive vice president, chief physician executive and dean of the Medical Faculty, marking a significant milestone for one of the nation’s leading healthcare institutions. The newly established position reflects Cedars-Sinai’s focus on strengthening leadership across patient care, research and medical education.
Dr. Thadhani is set to begin his expanded responsibilities on September 1. In this role, he will oversee the organization’s clinical services, academic operations and research programs while continuing to guide initiatives focused on patient safety, healthcare quality, medical affairs and clinical standards. His leadership will also extend to Cedars-Sinai Health Sciences University, the Burns and Allen Research Institute and several educational programs connected to the health system.
Cedars-Sinai President and CEO Dr. Peter L. Slavin praised Thadhani’s appointment, highlighting his distinguished background in academic medicine, healthcare leadership and scientific research. According to Slavin, Thadhani’s expertise positions him well to lead the institution’s growing clinical and academic mission.
Throughout his career, Thadhani has held senior leadership positions at several renowned medical institutions. Before returning to Cedars-Sinai, he served as executive vice president for health affairs at Emory University, where he also held leadership responsibilities within the Emory Healthcare Board of Directors and the Woodruff Health Sciences Center.
His professional journey has also included key appointments at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Thadhani first joined Cedars-Sinai in 2017 as vice dean for Research and Education before returning to Harvard, where he served as professor of medicine, chief academic officer and dean for Faculty Affairs at Mass General Brigham and Harvard Medical School.
A respected nephrologist, Thadhani has earned international recognition for his work on kidney disease and complications during pregnancy. Over the course of his career, he has authored or co-authored more than 300 scientific publications in some of the world’s leading medical journals.
One of his most notable research contributions involved preeclampsia, a potentially dangerous pregnancy condition. His collaboration with Cedars-Sinai researchers helped advance the development of the first U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved test designed to predict the disorder, representing an important step forward in maternal healthcare.
Thadhani’s contributions to medical science have also been recognized nationally. Earlier this year, he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, adding to his 2025 election to the National Academy of Medicine, further underscoring his impact on clinical research and academic medicine.
