Air India is set to improve its Toronto-Delhi operations by deploying its new Boeing 787-9 aircraft on the route beginning August 1. The move introduces the airline’s latest cabin experience for passengers traveling between Canada and India while also bringing back daily service after a temporary reduction in flight frequency.
A major benefit of the aircraft upgrade is the elimination of the technical fuel stop in Vienna for flights departing from Delhi. Without the additional stop, the airline expects to reduce the journey by nearly three hours, making travel significantly faster and more convenient. The Delhi-to-Toronto service will now take approximately 17 hours, compared with the previous travel time of around 20 hours. Meanwhile, the Toronto-to-Delhi route will continue operating as a nonstop service with an estimated flight time of about 16 hours. Air India noted that the revised schedule remains subject to available airspace.
The airline is also restoring its full daily schedule on the Toronto-Delhi route from August 1. Earlier this summer, Air India had temporarily reduced the service to five flights each week during June and July. The adjustment was made in response to rising fuel costs and geopolitical developments that affected international flight operations.
The introduction of the Boeing 787-9 is part of Air India’s broader effort to modernize its fleet and enhance the passenger experience across its international network. Travelers on the route will benefit from updated cabin interiors and improved onboard amenities designed to provide greater comfort during the long-haul journey.
Air India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson emphasized the strategic importance of Canada within the airline’s global network. He noted that Canada is home to one of the world’s largest Indian diaspora communities, making Toronto a key international destination for the carrier. According to Wilson, introducing the airline’s newest aircraft on this route reflects Air India’s continued investment in improving connectivity and delivering a more efficient travel experience for customers.
The changes are expected to benefit both business and leisure travelers by offering shorter travel times, more consistent scheduling and upgraded onboard services. The move also strengthens Air India’s presence in the Canada-India market, where demand for direct flights continues to remain strong among passengers traveling between the two countries.
