The close relationship between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given fresh momentum to India-Israel relations, strengthening mutual confidence and expanding cooperation, according to a report published by The Times of Israel.
Although India and Israel established full diplomatic relations in 1992, their security and strategic cooperation continued to develop under successive governments. The report observed that Modi and Netanyahu have played an important role in raising the partnership’s profile and taking longstanding bilateral ties to a more prominent level.
Describing their connection as more than personal chemistry or diplomatic symbolism, the report emphasized the deeper trust between the two leaders and their countries. It highlighted their shared historical experiences, cultural continuity and determination to preserve their national identities despite major challenges.
Both nations have faced difficult regional security environments, with terrorism and national defence remaining important concerns. The report also pointed to the historical presence of Jewish communities in India, particularly in Kochi and Mumbai, noting that they lived alongside Indian society for centuries. This shared history provides a distinctive foundation for the relationship.
Cooperation between the countries has expanded across several sectors, including defence, agriculture, water management, cybersecurity and technology. According to the report, mutual confidence helped create the conditions for these partnerships to grow.
However, it argued that the real measure of the Modi-Netanyahu relationship will be whether bilateral cooperation continues after both leaders leave office. It urged Israel’s next government to view ties with India as a long-term national priority rather than a political legacy associated with a particular administration.
The report concluded that institutionalizing cooperation and strengthening people-to-people connections could transform the leaders’ personal understanding into a lasting partnership between the two countries.
