US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has called for a stronger and more predictable business environment to help India and the United States unlock the full potential of their growing commercial partnership. Speaking at the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce National Convention 2026, Gor emphasized the importance of stable policies, stronger intellectual property protections and greater confidence between the two countries.
Gor pointed to the dramatic expansion in bilateral economic activity over the past two decades. Trade in goods and services between India and the United States has grown from roughly $20 billion to more than $240 billion. The two countries are now working toward an ambitious goal of taking bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.
While describing the relationship as one built on deep trust, Gor acknowledged that several challenges still need to be addressed. He said businesses require predictable tax policies and regulatory systems that provide greater certainty for investment and long-term growth.
The ambassador also highlighted the importance of closer discussions over export controls and technology transfers. According to Gor, trust-based engagement in these areas would allow companies to invest more confidently in emerging industries while supporting innovation on both sides.
Intellectual property protection was another priority outlined by the US envoy. He argued that stronger safeguards would give entrepreneurs and companies greater confidence to develop new products, invest capital and expand their operations without concerns over the security of their innovations.
Gor credited businesses in both countries with playing an important role in strengthening economic relations. He pointed to expanding cooperation in artificial intelligence, technology, aerospace, defense and energy as evidence of the partnership’s broader reach.
He also discussed the strategic dimension of India-US relations under US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gor said the two leaders have placed technology-driven cooperation at the center of their engagement, particularly in areas considered critical to future economic and national security.
These areas include artificial intelligence, quantum computing, semiconductors, defense and critical minerals. Gor said deeper collaboration across these fields could further transform the bilateral relationship and create new opportunities for businesses.
The ambassador also highlighted India’s growing importance in the global technology landscape. He cited the Global AI Summit hosted in New Delhi, where significant participation from US companies demonstrated the country’s expanding role in international technology cooperation.
Gor’s remarks underscore the growing ambition behind the India-US commercial relationship, with both nations seeking to move beyond traditional trade and build deeper cooperation across strategic technologies and emerging industries.
