California State University, Long Beach, has introduced a new endowed chair of Jain Studies within the Department of Religious Studies, allowing students to delve into the intricacies of Jainism. Dr. Shivani Bothra has been appointed as the assistant professor and the Bhagwan Suvidhinath Endowed Chair in Jain Studies, marking a significant development for the university.
Expressing her thoughts on the appointment, Bothra emphasized the Department of Religious Studies’ acknowledgment of Jainism’s profound impact on the study of religions. She highlighted Jainism’s unique philosophy, emphasizing the unity of humanity and the crucial importance of harmonious coexistence among all beings. Bothra, who previously taught “Introduction to Jainish” in the fall of 2023, is set to continue teaching Jainism in the upcoming semester of 2024.
Dr. Jasvant Modi, a retired gastroenterologist based in Los Angeles, and the Shah Foundation, on behalf of Raksha and Harshad Shah, played instrumental roles in creating and funding the Bhagwan Suvidhinath Endowed Chair in Jain Studies. Named after the 9th Tirthankara, a spiritual teacher in Jainism, the chair aims to enrich the understanding of Jain values among students.
Bothra expressed gratitude for the contributions of Dr. Modi, highlighting the significance of this opportunity for first-generation college students at CSULB to explore Jainism and its values. She underlined the satisfaction derived from witnessing students eager to learn about Jainism.
In the upcoming spring semester, Bothra will lead the Religious Studies 354 class, titled ‘Jain Worldview: Philosophy and Ethics.’ Beyond Jainism, she will also offer courses exploring the role of non-violence in various world religions, expanding the educational offerings in the Department of Religious Studies at CSU, Long Beach.
