A major religious and archaeological discovery has drawn widespread attention in Ujjain after an ancient Shivling was unearthed during excavation work linked to preparations for Simhastha 2028. The structure was discovered near the Mahakaleshwar Temple area while workers were carrying out construction activities for an underground tunnel and ramp project.
According to officials, the excavation work was being conducted to develop access infrastructure connected to the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. During the digging process, workers unexpectedly came across a large Shivling buried deep underground, bringing construction activities to an immediate halt.
Videos circulating online captured the moment the ancient stone Shivling emerged from the excavation site. The footage showed the religious structure partially uncovered amid the ongoing construction zone, quickly attracting attention from local residents and devotees.
An engineer associated with the project stated that the discovery was made early in the morning when temple-related activities had begun nearby. Workers and officials present at the site immediately informed temple authorities after realizing the significance of the structure.
Soon after the information was shared, priests arrived at the location and performed traditional Hindu rituals, including puja and abhishek, for the Shivling. The religious ceremonies drew a growing number of devotees who gathered at the site to offer prayers and chant devotional slogans dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Witnesses reported that chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Jai Shri Mahakal” echoed across the area as crowds assembled to witness the discovery. Many devotees viewed the emergence of the Shivling as spiritually significant given its proximity to the revered Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the most important Jyotirlingas in India.
Authorities confirmed that the Shivling appears to be carved from a single stone and had remained buried underground for an unknown period. Following the discovery, local administration officials suspended all construction work in the area until further examination could be completed.
The Archaeological Department has now been informed and experts are expected to conduct a detailed study to determine the age, origin, and historical importance of the structure. Officials believe the findings could provide valuable insight into the region’s ancient religious and cultural heritage.
The district administration is also expected to assess the site before deciding whether the infrastructure project can continue or if modifications will be required to preserve the discovered structure.
The incident has generated strong public interest and transformed the excavation area into a gathering point for devotees seeking darshan and offering prayers. Many residents believe the discovery adds another spiritual dimension to preparations for the upcoming Simhastha festival in Ujjain.
