The American Punjabi Society (APS) organized a large-scale Vaisakhi celebration in Mineola, New York, bringing together community leaders, elected officials, diplomats, and members of the Indian American community for an evening centered on culture, unity, and heritage.
The event was hosted at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in collaboration with Nassau County officials, the Consulate General of India in New York, and several local organizations. The celebration marked both Vaisakhi and Khalsa Sajna Diwas, one of the most significant occasions in Sikh history.
The program began with a formal welcome led by community representatives and organizers, creating an atmosphere that blended cultural pride with civic engagement. The event was attended by Consul General of India Ambassador Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, whose presence highlighted the strong relationship between India and the Indian diaspora in the United States.
Community leaders, public officials, and representatives from multiple Sikh organizations participated in the celebration, emphasizing themes of unity, service, and cultural preservation.
APS Global President Gary S. Sikka and Founder Patron Harry Singh Bolla played key roles in leading the evening’s activities. Organizers highlighted the organization’s continued efforts toward community outreach, youth engagement, educational programs, and cultural initiatives aimed at preserving Punjabi and Sikh heritage across generations.
The event featured a ceremonial Presentation of Colors followed by energetic cultural performances, including traditional bhangra and giddha dances. Guests were also presented with programs reflecting the religious and historical significance of Vaisakhi and the creation of the Khalsa.
Nassau County Executive Bruce A. Blakeman praised the Punjabi community for its contributions to the region’s cultural diversity and social development. He also acknowledged APS for encouraging intercommunity cooperation and promoting inclusivity through cultural initiatives.
During the event, speakers reflected on the spiritual importance of Vaisakhi and the enduring values associated with Sikh teachings, including equality, courage, faith, and selfless service. Religious leaders and scholars also discussed the historical significance of Khalsa Sajna Diwas and its relevance for future generations.
The gathering additionally served as a platform to recognize individuals for outstanding contributions in community service, leadership, and cultural enrichment. Several honorees from different professional and social backgrounds were acknowledged for their efforts toward strengthening community engagement.
Representatives from major Gurdwaras across New York participated in the celebration, symbolizing unity within the Sikh community. Members of the Sikh Officers Association of the NYPD and several Indian American organizations were also present.
The evening concluded with networking, community interactions, and a traditional Punjabi dinner, further reflecting the spirit of hospitality and togetherness associated with the Vaisakhi festival.
Through events like these, the American Punjabi Society continues to strengthen cultural awareness, promote community service, and preserve Punjabi traditions among Indian Americans in the United States.
