Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi on Monday for high-level bilateral discussions aimed at deepening cooperation between the neighboring countries. The meeting, held at Hyderabad House, focused on enhancing collaboration in several areas, including trade, economic engagement, technology, connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges.
The talks reflect ongoing efforts by both nations to strengthen a relationship rooted in shared history, cultural connections, and geographic proximity. Officials from the two sides explored ways to expand existing partnerships and identify new opportunities for cooperation that could contribute to regional stability and economic growth.
Following the discussions with Prime Minister Modi, President Hlaing is scheduled to meet President at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Myanmar leader is also expected to visit “The Light and the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One,” a major international exhibition showcasing the sacred Piprahwa relics associated with Lord Buddha. The exhibition highlights the strong spiritual and cultural links shared by the two countries.
Ahead of the bilateral talks, President Hlaing held separate meetings with India’s National Security Advisor, , to discuss security-related cooperation. He also met External Affairs Minister , who expressed optimism about advancing the long-standing partnership between India and Myanmar. Jaishankar noted that both countries remain committed to promoting peace, prosperity, and deeper bilateral engagement.
The Myanmar President arrived in India over the weekend and was received by Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh. Indian officials described the visit as an important opportunity to reinforce cooperation across diverse sectors while advancing a shared vision for regional development and connectivity.
President Hlaing began his five-day India visit in Gaya, Bihar, a city of immense significance in the Buddhist world. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit reflects the enduring spiritual, historical, and people-to-people ties connecting the two nations.
This marks President Hlaing’s first official visit to India since assuming office. Accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes cabinet ministers, senior government officials, and business representatives, he is also expected to participate in a business forum during his stay. On June 2, he will travel to Mumbai for meetings with industry leaders and additional engagements aimed at boosting economic cooperation between the two countries.
