External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met outgoing German Ambassador Philipp Ackermann in New Delhi for a farewell interaction, recognizing his significant efforts toward strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Germany. During the meeting, Jaishankar expressed appreciation for Ackermann’s contributions to enhancing bilateral relations and conveyed his best wishes for his future diplomatic responsibilities.
Sharing updates about the meeting, Jaishankar stated that he was pleased to receive Ackermann for a farewell call and acknowledged the ambassador’s valuable role in advancing cooperation between the two nations. The interaction reflects the continued momentum in India-Germany relations, which have expanded across multiple areas, including trade, technology, sustainability, energy, and diplomatic engagement.
Throughout his diplomatic career, Philipp Ackermann has held several important positions in Germany’s foreign service. Before joining the diplomatic corps, he studied art history and economics at universities in Bonn, Heidelberg, and Utrecht and completed his doctorate in art history in 1993. Soon after, he began his career with Germany’s Foreign Service.
Ackermann has represented Germany in several major international assignments, including roles in Morocco and at Germany’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. Between 2006 and 2007, he led Germany’s Provincial Reconstruction Team in Kunduz, Afghanistan, gaining experience in international security and development efforts.
His connection with India began earlier in his career when he served as Political Counsellor at the German Embassy in New Delhi from 2007 to 2010. He later took on significant responsibilities, including heading the Afghanistan-Pakistan Task Force at Germany’s Federal Foreign Office and serving as Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Ackermann also worked as Deputy Head of Mission at Germany’s Embassy in Washington from 2014 to 2016. Before becoming Germany’s Ambassador to India, he served as Director General overseeing Africa, Latin America, and the Near and Middle East at the Federal Foreign Office.
During his tenure in India, Ackermann emphasized the importance of stronger collaboration between the two countries, particularly in renewable energy and sustainability. He highlighted that India and Germany are working together to develop cleaner energy solutions and create a more sustainable future.
He also stressed the need for both nations to diversify energy sources amid geopolitical uncertainties, including conflicts in West Asia. According to Ackermann, reducing dependence on a limited number of energy suppliers is essential for improving long-term energy security.
The farewell meeting between Jaishankar and Ackermann highlights the deepening relationship between India and Germany, with both countries continuing to explore new opportunities for cooperation in strategic and economic sectors.
