Prime Minister Narendra Modi held his first phone conversation with newly elected UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, marking a new phase in India-United Kingdom relations. The two leaders discussed ways to expand cooperation across key sectors, including technology, artificial intelligence, defence, trade, security, clean energy, and education.
During the conversation, PM Modi congratulated Burnham on assuming office and expressed India’s commitment to further strengthening the long-standing partnership between the two nations. Modi said both countries would work together to elevate the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and create new opportunities for shared growth.
The leaders also focused on maximizing the benefits of the recently operationalized India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. The agreement is expected to enhance trade and investment opportunities, support businesses, and contribute to economic growth in both countries.
According to the UK Prime Minister’s Office, Burnham described the India-UK relationship as an important partnership that has positively influenced communities across Britain. He highlighted his vision of strengthening bilateral ties through the UK-India Vision 2035 framework and increasing people-to-people connections.
Both leaders recognized the valuable contribution of the Indian community in the United Kingdom and discussed the historical links between the two countries. PM Modi also highlighted the connection between Manchester and Ahmedabad, referring to Ahmedabad as the “Manchester of India” due to its historic textile industry.
Technology and innovation emerged as major areas of future collaboration. Burnham reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to advancing the UK-India Technology Security Initiative, with both sides identifying artificial intelligence and emerging technologies as important fields for cooperation.
The leaders welcomed the potential economic advantages created by the India-UK trade agreement, emphasizing that stronger commercial ties could generate new opportunities for citizens and businesses in both nations.
Beyond bilateral cooperation, Modi and Burnham also discussed international developments, including the situation in the Middle East. The two leaders agreed on the importance of supporting de-escalation efforts and maintaining regional stability. They also discussed cooperation aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route for global energy transportation and international trade.
The conversation reflected the growing depth of India-UK relations across economic, technological, and security areas. Both leaders agreed to remain closely engaged and expressed their intention to continue discussions through future meetings and diplomatic exchanges.
