India intensified its diplomatic outreach in South America as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held extensive discussions with Suriname’s top leadership during his official visit to the country. The visit focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation across several major sectors, including trade, investment, energy, defense, healthcare, and cultural exchanges.
Upon arriving in Paramaribo on Wednesday local time, Jaishankar received a warm welcome from Suriname’s Foreign Minister Melvin Bouva. The two leaders later conducted bilateral talks aimed at expanding the longstanding partnership between the two nations. Senior officials from both sides also participated in discussions during the 9th Joint Commission Meeting, where a broad review of India-Suriname relations was undertaken.
Following the meeting, Jaishankar shared details of the discussions on X, highlighting that both countries explored opportunities in digital cooperation, development assistance, capacity building, mobility, and people-to-people engagement. He expressed confidence that the outcomes of the dialogue would help diversify and deepen the relationship between India and Suriname in the coming years.
During the visit, the External Affairs Minister also met Suriname President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons and conveyed greetings from India to the people and government of the South American nation. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to unlocking the full potential of the historic relationship shared by the two countries, which is deeply rooted in cultural and ancestral connections.
Jaishankar also paid tribute at the “Monument for the Fallen Heroes” in Marienburg, honoring Indian indentured laborers, known as Girmityas, who lost their lives while resisting colonial rule in 1902. Remembering their sacrifices, he described their struggle for dignity and freedom as an enduring inspiration in the broader fight against colonialism and injustice.
As part of his engagements, the minister interacted with the Indian diaspora in Suriname and discussed India’s rapid transformation across multiple sectors. He assured the community that India would continue to remain a dependable partner in supporting Suriname’s growth, development, and prosperity.
