India and Brazil are looking to strengthen their partnership across multiple strategic sectors as New Delhi prepares to host the 18th BRICS Summit. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on Friday in New Delhi, with discussions covering bilateral relations as well as broader multilateral cooperation.
The meeting came at the start of India’s 2026 BRICS chairship and focused on areas where the two countries see opportunities for deeper engagement. Jaishankar said the talks included trade and investment, defense, energy, agriculture and space, highlighting the increasingly broad nature of cooperation between the two emerging economies.
The ministers also reviewed their countries’ collaboration through major international forums. Their discussion included work at the United Nations, the Group of 20 and the International Maritime Organization, reflecting India’s and Brazil’s shared interest in strengthening coordination on global issues.
The conversation also turned to the international geopolitical environment. Jaishankar and Vieira exchanged perspectives on current developments and emphasized the role of BRICS as a platform for dialogue, diplomacy and cooperation among its members.
India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13 as part of its year-long leadership of the grouping. The expanded BRICS framework brings together a broader set of emerging economies and provides a forum for discussions on economic, political and development-related priorities.
India’s chairship is centered on the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” New Delhi has identified development, sustainability and innovation as key areas of focus during its leadership of the bloc.
The Jaishankar-Vieira meeting therefore comes at an important moment for both countries. Beyond their bilateral agenda, India and Brazil are influential members of the Global South and have increasingly worked together on international platforms.
The discussions in New Delhi underscore India’s effort to use its BRICS chairship to promote practical cooperation while deepening partnerships with fellow member countries. For Brazil, closer engagement with India also offers opportunities across sectors ranging from commerce and energy to technology, agriculture and space.
As leaders and representatives gather in New Delhi for the summit, India-Brazil cooperation is expected to remain an important part of discussions surrounding BRICS’ future direction and its role in global diplomacy.
