India is hosting the 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi, bringing together leaders from major emerging and developing economies for discussions on economic cooperation, global challenges and shared growth. Union Home Minister Amit Shah welcomed the participating leaders on Friday, highlighting the importance of the gathering at a time when global economic and geopolitical dynamics are undergoing significant changes.
Sharing a video of Bharat Mandapam, the venue for the two-day summit, Shah said the stage was set for BRICS 2026. He described India as the world’s largest democracy and said the country was pleased to welcome leaders from across the grouping. The Home Minister emphasized the need to strengthen relations among member countries, expand cooperation and work toward greater shared prosperity.
The summit is scheduled to take place in New Delhi from September 12 to 13. The BRICS grouping currently includes Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, India, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. The participating countries bring together a significant share of the world’s population, economic output and international trade, giving the grouping growing influence in global affairs.
India assumed the BRICS chairship on January 1, 2026, marking its fourth time leading the grouping. The country previously held the chair in 2012, 2016 and 2021. This year’s agenda is centered on the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” reflecting India’s emphasis on strengthening collective responses to economic and global challenges.
The expansion of BRICS has also increased its geographic and economic reach. With members from Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, the group represents a broader coalition of emerging economies than when it was originally established.
India’s leadership of the summit comes as BRICS seeks a stronger role in shaping discussions on global economic governance, trade, development and international cooperation. The New Delhi meeting is therefore significant for India’s foreign policy, as the country seeks to position itself as a key voice among emerging economies while promoting greater coordination among BRICS members.
The summit is expected to provide an important platform for leaders to discuss ways to strengthen economic partnerships, encourage innovation and build more resilient and sustainable growth across member countries.
