India and Vietnam have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening defence ties, with both nations focusing on adding greater momentum to their strategic cooperation. The discussions highlight a shared vision to expand collaboration across key defence and security domains while reinforcing their broader bilateral partnership.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held detailed talks with Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phan Van Giang in New Delhi, where both sides reviewed ongoing engagements and explored new avenues to enhance defence cooperation. The meeting underscored India’s readiness to deepen its strategic partnership with Vietnam, reflecting the growing convergence between the two countries.
The dialogue focused on expanding defence collaboration through joint exercises, technology cooperation, and capacity building initiatives. Maritime security remains a key pillar of engagement, with both countries recognising the importance of safeguarding stability and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vietnamese President To Lam held wide-ranging discussions covering defence and security, trade and investment, science and technology, and development cooperation. The leaders agreed to elevate bilateral ties to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, marking a significant milestone in their relationship.
As part of their forward-looking agenda, both sides set an ambitious target to expand bilateral trade to USD 25 billion by 2030. They also explored cooperation in emerging sectors such as renewable energy, space, critical minerals, and digital technologies, alongside strengthening cultural and people-to-people connections.
The partnership is further reinforced by Vietnam’s participation in regional initiatives such as the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, reflecting shared priorities in maintaining regional stability and promoting sustainable development. India also announced support for heritage conservation projects in Vietnam, highlighting the cultural dimension of the relationship.
Both countries reiterated their strong stance against terrorism and emphasised the importance of coordinated global efforts to address security challenges. The engagement between India and Vietnam is expected to open new avenues for collaboration, enhance defence capabilities, and contribute to a stable and rules-based Indo-Pacific order.
The ongoing high-level exchanges signal a deepening of ties rooted in historical and civilisational connections, while also adapting to evolving geopolitical realities. As India and Vietnam continue to strengthen their defence and strategic cooperation, the partnership is poised to play a more significant role in shaping regional security and economic dynamics.
