The upcoming historical drama “Raja Shivaji,” based on the life and legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, has generated strong excitement among audiences ahead of its release. The film stars Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia Deshmukh, with Riteish also stepping into the role of director. Scheduled for a theatrical release on Maharashtra Day, May 1, 2026, the project aims to celebrate the enduring legacy of the founder of the Maratha Empire. The story of Shivaji Maharaj has been portrayed multiple times in both Hindi and Marathi cinema, reflecting his lasting cultural significance.
Alongside this project, another ambitious historical film titled “Vedat Marathe Veer Daudale Saat” was announced earlier, featuring Akshay Kumar in his Marathi film debut as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, the film was planned as a large-scale multi-starrer featuring several prominent Marathi actors. Production began in December 2022, with an initial release target set for Diwali 2023. However, despite extensive pre-production work spanning several years, the film encountered repeated delays.
The project reportedly faced major setbacks due to financial challenges affecting its production house. These difficulties eventually led to a halt in filming, leaving the project incomplete. Akshay Kumar, who had filmed for only a few days for his role, later moved on to other commitments, while the movie remained in limbo without a confirmed release date.
“Vedat Marathe Veer Daudale Saat” is based on a powerful historical chapter involving the Battle of Nesari in 1674. The narrative focuses on seven warriors from the Maratha army who displayed exceptional courage while fighting against a vastly larger opposing force. Their sacrifice and loyalty to the Maratha kingdom have been celebrated in historical accounts and cultural writings, forming the emotional core of the film’s story.
Although there has been speculation about a possible revival of the stalled project, no official announcement has been made so far. Industry observers note that its future remains uncertain, especially as key actors and producers have moved on to other projects.
Meanwhile, “Raja Shivaji” continues to generate strong momentum with its ensemble cast, which includes several well-known names from Hindi and Marathi cinema. The film will release in both languages and is expected to reach a wide audience across India.
Together, these projects highlight the continued interest in cinematic portrayals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s life, legacy, and the historical era of the Maratha Empire.
