National Award-winning filmmaker Vinod Kapri’s Pyre is set to release theatrically across India on October 23, 2026. Set in the Kumaon Himalayas of Uttarakhand, the film follows an elderly couple whose lives are deeply connected to their home, memories and decades-long companionship.
The film explores the emotional impact of migration as the couple’s children leave their mountain village in search of better opportunities. Left behind, the parents face their later years while maintaining the life and relationship they have built together.
Produced by Vinod Kapri, Suresh Joshi and Arindra Rai Chaudhuri under Bhagirathi Films and Mashakbeen Studios, Pyre features Uttarakhand residents Padam Singh Kapri and Heera Devi in the lead roles. The two performers had no previous professional acting experience.
Padam Singh Kapri, who plays Padam Singh, is a retired Army serviceman, while Heera Devi, who portrays Tulsi, is a widow, homemaker and former dancer. Their personal experiences contributed to the film’s naturalistic portrayal of an elderly couple.
Pyre began its international festival journey with its world premiere at the 28th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, where it received the PÖFF Best Film Audience Award. It subsequently screened at several international festivals, including those in São Paulo, Cambridge, Bath, Fajr and Kerala.
According to the filmmakers, the film has won 18 international awards, including 15 Best Film honors. It has also received recognition for direction, music, cinematography and sound at various festivals.
Cinépolis will distribute Pyre theatrically in India. The film features music by composer Mychael Danna, known for films including Life of Pi, Monsoon Wedding and Moneyball, with lyrics by poet and lyricist Gulzar.
Shot across the mountains of Uttarakhand, Pyre combines the region’s Himalayan landscape with a story centered on ageing, migration, family separation and enduring companionship.
