India and China recently conducted bilateral consultations under the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in New Delhi, focusing on strengthening cooperation and reviewing the organisation’s future direction. The discussions centered on implementing decisions made by SCO leaders and enhancing collaboration across key sectors. Both sides expressed their commitment to maintaining regular dialogue and deepening engagement within the SCO structure.
The meeting took place over two days and was led by India’s SCO National Coordinator, Ambassador Alok A Dimri, and China’s National Coordinator, Ambassador Yan Wenbin. During the consultations, both delegations also met Secretary (West) Sibi George to assess progress in areas such as security cooperation, trade relations, connectivity initiatives, and people to people exchanges. The discussions highlighted the importance of sustained coordination to achieve shared regional objectives.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, established in 2001, has evolved into a significant regional grouping focused on political, economic, and security cooperation. Originally formed by China, Russia, and four Central Asian nations, the organisation has expanded over the years. India and Pakistan became members in 2017, followed by Iran in 2023 and Belarus in 2024, increasing the total membership to ten countries. The SCO also includes observer states and multiple dialogue partners, reflecting its growing global relevance.
Kyrgyzstan currently holds the chairmanship for the 2025 to 2026 period, with a theme centered on promoting sustainable peace, development, and prosperity. This theme aligns with the broader goals of the organisation, which seeks to strengthen regional stability while encouraging economic growth and cultural exchange among member states.
In a related development, China has reiterated its interest in enhancing ties with India. Marking the anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, China’s ambassador to India emphasized the importance of strategic alignment and deeper cooperation. The statement highlighted the mutual benefits of maintaining strong neighborly relations and expanding collaboration across multiple sectors.
