India has formally welcomed the recently announced ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, signaling its support for efforts aimed at restoring stability in West Asia. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that New Delhi stands behind initiatives that promote peace in the region. During a media interaction, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that India encourages any step that contributes to reducing tensions and fostering dialogue.
The development comes after a 10 day truce between Israel and Lebanon came into effect, marking a temporary halt in hostilities. The ceasefire follows intensified diplomatic efforts, particularly by the United States, to ease the conflict and create conditions for broader negotiations involving Iran. The situation in West Asia has remained volatile, prompting global attention and diplomatic engagement from multiple nations.
US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about the ceasefire, suggesting that it could pave the way for a historic meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. Such a meeting, if it materializes, would mark a significant diplomatic milestone after decades. Trump also urged Hezbollah to act responsibly during the truce period, highlighting the importance of maintaining calm to achieve lasting peace.
Despite the ceasefire, tensions on the ground remain high. Israeli leadership has indicated that military forces will continue to maintain a presence in a designated security zone to prevent further threats. Netanyahu reiterated that Israel’s long term goals include ensuring security and working toward a sustainable peace arrangement. At the same time, reports from Lebanon suggested that isolated military activity continued shortly after the ceasefire began, underlining the fragile nature of the agreement.
India has also indicated that it is closely monitoring broader regional developments, including any external involvement in ongoing negotiations. The conflict, which escalated following military actions involving the United States and Israel earlier this year, has since expanded with the involvement of Lebanon after Hezbollah launched attacks.
While the current pause in fighting offers a window for diplomatic progress, the path to a permanent resolution remains uncertain. Celebrations in parts of Beirut reflect cautious optimism, but the evolving situation continues to require careful observation and sustained international efforts.
