India and Cyprus have taken another step toward strengthening their bilateral relationship through high level discussions focused on legal and institutional cooperation. India’s High Commissioner to Cyprus, Manish, met with Cyprus Minister of Justice and Public Order Costas Fytiris to discuss a wide range of issues, including extradition, criminal matters, and consular concerns affecting Indian nationals. The meeting highlighted both countries’ commitment to improving coordination in justice related areas while addressing practical challenges.
During the interaction, the Indian envoy also updated the Cypriot side on recent developments in bilateral relations and preparations for the upcoming visit of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides to India in May 2026. The visit is expected to play a key role in further enhancing diplomatic engagement and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. Both sides acknowledged the importance of continued dialogue to ensure progress in areas of shared interest.
Earlier this month, the High Commissioner had also met President Christodoulides in Nicosia, where discussions focused on finalizing key outcomes for the upcoming visit. The talks reviewed the implementation of the India Cyprus Joint Action Plan, which aims to deepen collaboration in sectors such as trade, investment, innovation, and connectivity. This initiative builds on the momentum created during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Cyprus in June 2025.
In addition to economic cooperation, both countries are working to strengthen ties in areas such as defence, security, renewable energy, digital transformation, and financial technology. Maritime cooperation and cultural exchanges are also being emphasized as important elements of the partnership. Efforts to improve academic collaboration and people to people connections remain a priority for both sides.
Previous high level engagements have also contributed to advancing this partnership. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Cypriot counterpart had earlier reviewed the Joint Action Plan in New Delhi, discussing regional developments and cooperation in international platforms. With Cyprus set to assume the European Union presidency in 2026, both countries see new opportunities to further strengthen India EU relations.
Overall, the ongoing diplomatic engagements reflect a steady effort by India and Cyprus to build a comprehensive partnership that combines political cooperation, economic growth, and cultural exchange, setting the stage for deeper collaboration in the years ahead.
