South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is scheduled to undertake a State Visit to India from April 19 to 21, following an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to an announcement by the Ministry of External Affairs. This marks his first official visit to India since assuming office and is expected to further strengthen diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.
During the visit, President Lee will engage in extensive discussions with Prime Minister Modi on expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. Key areas of focus include shipbuilding, trade, investment, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and other critical and emerging technologies. Both leaders are also expected to explore avenues for deeper cultural exchange and stronger people-to-people connections, alongside discussions on regional and global developments of mutual concern.
The visit will also feature a series of high-level engagements. Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to host a special luncheon in honor of the visiting President, while President Droupadi Murmu will hold a formal banquet during his stay. In addition, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is expected to meet President Lee shortly after his arrival.
President Lee will be accompanied by First Lady Kim Hea Kyung and a senior delegation comprising government ministers, top officials, and business representatives, reflecting the importance of the visit in strengthening economic and strategic ties.
The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that the India–Republic of Korea relationship is built on shared democratic values, historical civilizational links, and a mutual commitment to rule-based international cooperation. The visit is seen as a continuation of both nations’ efforts to broaden their partnership into new and high-growth sectors while consolidating existing areas of collaboration.
In recent years, bilateral engagement has gained strong momentum. Prime Minister Modi previously met President Lee on the sidelines of international summits, including discussions focused on enhancing economic cooperation and investment flows. These interactions have helped reinforce the growing “Special Strategic Partnership” between India and South Korea.
Overall, the upcoming visit is expected to serve as a major step in advancing economic, technological, and strategic collaboration, while also strengthening long-term diplomatic ties between New Delhi and Seoul.
