Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced a significant step forward in strengthening bilateral relations between India and Austria, focusing on key sectors such as defense, semiconductors, and quantum technology. Speaking alongside Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker during a joint press interaction in New Delhi, Modi highlighted the importance of this visit, especially as it marks the Austrian leader’s first official trip to India and his first journey outside Europe.
The Prime Minister emphasized that this visit carries historic value, noting that it comes after nearly four decades since an Austrian Chancellor last visited India. According to him, this moment signals the beginning of a renewed and forward-looking phase in diplomatic relations between the two nations. He also pointed out that the recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement in 2026 has opened new opportunities, strengthening India’s engagement with Europe on multiple fronts.
Modi underlined the strong economic partnership between India and Austria, particularly in infrastructure, engineering, and sustainable development. Austrian expertise has contributed to major Indian projects, including metro systems, tunnel construction in challenging terrains, and advanced transport solutions. Austrian firms have also played a role in various sectors such as clean energy, urban development, and large-scale engineering projects, reinforcing long-standing cooperation.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister stressed that the current visit would accelerate trade and investment ties, supported by a large Austrian business delegation. He noted that combining Austria’s technical expertise with India’s scale and rapid growth could help create reliable global supply chains. Future collaboration is expected to expand across advanced sectors including biotechnology, defense manufacturing, and next-generation technologies.
In the field of education, both countries are taking steps to strengthen academic partnerships, particularly in engineering and technical disciplines. A new agreement between leading institutions reflects a growing emphasis on knowledge exchange and research collaboration.
Modi also highlighted people-to-people connections, stating that Indian talent can contribute significantly to Austria’s innovation ecosystem. Building on an earlier migration agreement, both nations plan to expand mobility opportunities, especially in sectors like healthcare. A new working holiday program has also been introduced to encourage youth exchange and cultural interaction.
Addressing global concerns, the Prime Minister reiterated the importance of peaceful dialogue over conflict. He stressed that ongoing global tensions require cooperative solutions, with both nations supporting long-term peace and stability. Additionally, he called for reforms in global institutions and reaffirmed a shared commitment to combating terrorism.
Concluding his remarks, Modi expressed confidence that the partnership between India and Austria will evolve into a future-ready alliance centered on innovation and shared progress.
