US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor visited the historic Thiksey Monastery in Ladakh on Friday as part of his ongoing tour of the Union Territory. His visit comes during a broader diplomatic engagement in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting Washington’s interest in strengthening ties with India on regional security and counter-terrorism.
Thiksey Monastery, located roughly 19 kilometers from Leh, is among the most prominent Buddhist monastic complexes in central Ladakh. Established in 1433, the hilltop monastery is renowned for its traditional architecture, which bears similarities to Tibet’s Potala Palace. The site contains centuries-old religious artifacts, including stupas, scrolls, images, and wall paintings.
One of the monastery’s notable attractions is a 15-meter-tall statue of Maitreya Buddha, installed during the 1980s. The monastery also continues to hold daily morning prayers, offering visitors an opportunity to experience its longstanding spiritual traditions. Its elevated location provides wide views of nearby settlements and the Indus River.
Gor reached Leh on Thursday after traveling through Jammu and Kashmir. Before arriving in Ladakh, he held discussions with important stakeholders in the Kashmir Valley, including Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. During his meeting with Abdullah, Gor reiterated Washington’s position on the region, describing Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India.
The meeting was notable because it represented the first interaction between a serving US ambassador and a sitting Jammu and Kashmir chief minister in more than 15 years. The previous meeting took place in 2011, when then-US Ambassador Timothy Roemer met Abdullah.
Gor also expressed confidence in further developing relations between India and the United States following his discussions with the chief minister. His visit marks renewed diplomatic engagement with Jammu and Kashmir’s elected government and comes several years after India’s 2019 decision to reorganize the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The ambassador’s regional tour also comes as India and the United States continue to cooperate on security-related issues. Recent discussions between Gor and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have included counter-terrorism cooperation, adding significance to his current visit.
Against this backdrop, Gor’s engagements in Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir underscore the broader strategic relationship between India and the United States and the importance both countries place on regional stability and security cooperation.
