US President Donald Trump has congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a historic electoral victory in West Bengal, marking a major political breakthrough for the ruling party. Calling the result both “historic” and “decisive,” Trump praised Modi’s leadership and stated that India is fortunate to have him leading the country.
The congratulatory message from Washington came shortly after the BJP captured power in West Bengal for the first time, ending Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year rule in the state. The development is being viewed as one of the most significant shifts in India’s political landscape in recent years, particularly because West Bengal had long been considered a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress.
The White House reaffirmed Trump’s support through comments shared by spokesperson Kush Desai, whose remarks were later highlighted by the US Embassy in India on social media. According to Desai, Trump had expressed admiration for Modi during a recent phone conversation between the two leaders and personally congratulated him on the BJP’s latest electoral success.
Political observers believe the victory represents a defining moment for the BJP’s expansion strategy in eastern India. Despite making gains across multiple regions over the years, the party had repeatedly struggled to gain full control in West Bengal. With a population exceeding 100 million people, the state carries enormous political significance and is often seen as one of the most influential electoral battlegrounds in the country.
The BJP’s success is being credited to a combination of welfare-driven promises, aggressive campaigning, and efforts to broaden its support base across different voter groups. Over several election cycles, the party steadily increased its vote share in the state before finally crossing the threshold needed to secure power. Analysts say the result reflects a substantial change in voter sentiment and political preferences within Bengal.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress have raised concerns regarding the election process and questioned the conduct of the Election Commission. Banerjee, who also lost her assembly seat to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, alleged irregularities and claimed that the outcome did not accurately reflect the will of the people.
In contrast, BJP leaders described the result as a strong public mandate against the Trinamool Congress, arguing that voters were dissatisfied with governance issues and law-and-order conditions in the state. The scale of the Bengal victory has overshadowed election developments in several other states and further strengthened Modi’s political standing during his third term as prime minister.
