Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) stands as a major diplomatic step in strengthening India’s engagement with the Global South. As part of his five-nation tour, this visit follows his stop in Ghana (July 2–3) and precedes visits to Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. This marks Modi’s first official trip to T&T as Prime Minister, and the first bilateral Prime Ministerial visit to the Caribbean nation since 1999.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the visit serves not only as a reaffirmation of India’s outreach to developing nations but also honors 180 years since Indian immigrants first arrived in Trinidad and Tobago. PM Modi is set to engage in comprehensive talks with President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, both of whom are of Indian heritage and proudly acknowledge their ancestral roots.
Bilateral discussions will touch on a wide array of sectors including pharmaceuticals, healthcare, agriculture, disaster resilience, renewable energy, digital infrastructure, technology, sports, and cultural exchanges. The leaders are also expected to sign multiple cooperative agreements during the visit.
One of the most symbolic moments of the trip will be PM Modi’s address to a Joint Session of the T&T Parliament. Notably, India had earlier gifted the Parliament’s Speaker’s chair—an emblem of shared democratic traditions. This gesture underscores the enduring historical and cultural bonds between the two nations, reinforced by a vibrant Indian diaspora that makes up nearly 45% of T&T’s population.
The MEA also confirmed that a large community event is being organized for Modi’s interaction with the local diaspora, highlighting the emotional and cultural connection that the Indian-origin population maintains with their ancestral homeland.
India and T&T’s ties have grown stronger over recent years through frequent high-level meetings and collaborative development initiatives. PM Modi’s visit is expected to invigorate this relationship, marking a new era of cooperation across regional and global platforms.
