In an impassioned speech at the United Nations, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar strongly reaffirmed the country’s uncompromising position against terrorism, declaring, “Terrorism anywhere threatens peace everywhere.” His remarks came during the opening of “The Human Cost of Terrorism,” an exhibition hosted by India’s Permanent Mission to the UN.
Describing the display as both a “gallery of human courage” and a tribute to those silenced by acts of terror, Jaishankar said the event was meant to restore voices to victims whose lives were stolen. He emphasized, “This is a remembrance for the countless lives devastated by terrorism — a solemn, symbolic effort to ensure they are not forgotten.”
Referring to the recent terror attack on civilians and pilgrims in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, the Minister highlighted how the United Nations Security Council quickly condemned the incident. Jaishankar pointed to this as evidence that the global community is increasingly recognizing the need for zero tolerance toward acts of terror.
While not explicitly naming any nation, Jaishankar took aim at state-sponsored terrorism, stating that when terrorism is supported by governments against neighboring countries — and driven by extremist ideologies — it must be exposed and opposed. He stressed that allowing such actions to go unchecked or yielding to threats like nuclear intimidation only enables impunity.
Calling on the United Nations to do more than simply remember, Jaishankar urged the global body and its members to act decisively, defend fundamental human rights, and uphold international values that terrorism seeks to destroy. “This is not just about commemoration,” he said. “It’s about renewing our collective resolve to protect what we all stand for.”
Reinforcing India’s leadership on this issue, the Minister concluded by stressing the need to dismantle every layer that supports terrorism — be it ideological, operational, or financial. “The global community must unite around core principles,” he asserted. “This exhibition reminds us of the shared responsibility we all carry.”
India’s rising voice in international forums such as the UN underscores not just its experience as a target of terrorism, but also its growing role in leading the charge for global accountability and meaningful action.
