Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has reiterated India’s efforts to attract international investment and create a business environment that encourages long-term partnerships. During his official visit to Japan, Goyal highlighted India’s expanding economy and the opportunities available to global investors across a range of industries.
On the second day of his visit, the minister held a breakfast roundtable with representatives of leading foreign institutional investors. The discussions centered on changes in India’s investment environment, improvements in doing business and new opportunities emerging across key sectors.
Goyal also met Ryo Ohira, managing director and head of East Asia at investment management firm Neuberger Berman, along with members of his delegation. Their discussions focused on expanding investment connections between India and Japan and developing stronger cooperation in financial and wealth management services.
According to Goyal, India’s economic expansion is creating a broader range of opportunities for international financial institutions. He emphasized the potential for greater collaboration between the two countries as businesses and investors look for new avenues for growth.
The minister also participated in an evening gathering at India House with people described as “friends of India.” He expressed appreciation to senior Japanese government officials and business leaders for their positive approach toward strengthening bilateral relations.
Goyal said India and Japan would work to advance the understandings reached by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shigeru Ishiba during their annual summit in July. The two sides are seeking to develop what India describes as a next-generation economic partnership, with greater emphasis on technology, investment and industrial cooperation.
During a fireside discussion with Nikkei Asia, Goyal outlined India’s economic growth and the areas where Japan could deepen its role. He pointed to semiconductors, clean energy, digital technology, information technology and infrastructure as important areas for future collaboration.
The minister said Japan’s longstanding contribution to India’s economic development provides a strong foundation for expanding the relationship. He also highlighted the opportunity for Japanese companies to take advantage of India’s large manufacturing base and scale their operations.
The broader partnership is expected to focus on building resilient supply chains, encouraging technological collaboration and creating opportunities for shared economic growth. Goyal emphasized that trust between the two countries remains an important foundation for deeper cooperation.
With India continuing to attract global businesses and Japan seeking new opportunities for investment and manufacturing, both countries are looking to strengthen their economic relationship through greater investment, innovation and industrial collaboration.
