Seoul witnessed renewed diplomatic engagement as India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun to review the growing breadth of bilateral relations. The discussions reflected a shared commitment to strengthening cooperation across key sectors including shipbuilding, trade, investment, defence, advanced technology, clean energy, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
Both leaders also placed strong emphasis on emerging areas such as startups and financial technology, recognizing them as vital engines for future economic growth. The dialogue further extended to multilateral coordination, highlighting the importance of closer alignment between the two nations in global forums.
Following the meeting, Jaishankar noted that the talks built upon recent high-level engagements, including the South Korean President’s visit to India. He highlighted that both sides reviewed progress in multiple areas where decisions had previously been taken, especially in trade facilitation, investment flows, and financial cooperation. He also emphasized that the rapidly evolving international environment makes stronger partnerships between trusted and like-minded countries increasingly important.
Cho Hyun echoed similar sentiments, stating that the recent presidential visit to India had significantly accelerated the momentum of bilateral relations. He noted that follow-up measures in areas such as commerce, finance, and investment were advancing steadily. He also referred to ongoing initiatives like “Korea Week” in India, designed to help address challenges faced by businesses operating across both markets and to deepen private sector engagement. Plans for similar outreach to support Indian companies entering the South Korean market were also highlighted.
During extended discussions over lunch, both ministers exchanged perspectives on global developments, particularly rising geopolitical uncertainties and economic disruptions linked to evolving situations in regions such as the Middle East. They agreed on the importance of maintaining close communication to manage potential economic ripple effects.
Jaishankar reiterated that foreign ministers play a central role in guiding the future direction of bilateral ties, ensuring coordination across government and economic sectors. He also underscored the importance of shared values, mutual trust, and strategic alignment in navigating a complex global order.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to advancing a forward-looking partnership, with further discussions expected at upcoming international forums, including the Jeju Forum.
