Tech billionaire Elon Musk recently highlighted the significant contribution of Indian talent to the United States, noting that America has greatly benefited from skilled professionals originating from India. This sentiment reflects a long-standing trend where Indian-origin leaders continue to rise to top executive positions across major American corporations, particularly in technology, healthcare, and consumer industries.
From global tech firms to healthcare and FMCG giants, Indian-American CEOs are increasingly shaping the direction of the US economy. Leaders such as Sridhar Ramaswamy of Snowflake, Asha Sharma of Microsoft Gaming, and Shailesh Jejurikar of Procter & Gamble have become prominent figures driving innovation and growth across sectors. Continuing this trend, two more executives of Indian origin have recently joined the list of CEOs leading major US companies.
Venkat Kavarthapu has been appointed CEO of Symplr, a healthcare technology company based in the United States, while Sridhar Kuppanna has taken over as CEO of ST Engineering iDirect, a global satellite communications firm. Both leaders trace their early academic and professional journeys back to India before moving to the United States on skilled work visas, where they steadily built their careers over the years.
Sridhar Kuppanna, originally from Tamil Nadu, began his academic journey in computer science before advancing into telecommunications during India’s tech expansion phase. After moving to the US in the early 2000s, he built a career spanning more than two decades in network systems and satellite communications. His leadership roles in engineering and technology divisions, including senior positions at Ribbon Communications, helped him establish himself as a recognized expert in telecom infrastructure, 5G networks, and cloud connectivity solutions.
Venkat Kavarthapu, originally from Hyderabad, followed a similar trajectory. After completing his engineering studies at Osmania University and earning an MBA from IIM Lucknow, he began his career in India’s IT sector before moving to the United States. Over time, he rose through leadership positions in healthcare technology, eventually becoming CEO of Edifecs in 2021. His latest appointment at Symplr places him at the forefront of healthcare innovation, where he focuses on AI-driven analytics and improving efficiency in patient care systems.
Together, their journeys reflect the growing influence of Indian-origin professionals in shaping global corporate leadership, particularly in advanced technology and healthcare sectors, reinforcing the broader impact of the Indian diaspora on the US economy.
