On May 3, 2025, Dr. Shuvendu Sen received the prestigious Sushruta Charaka Award—recognized as the pinnacle of achievement in the healthcare field—from the Association of Indians in America (AIA). This prestigious ceremony was held during AIA’s annual awards gala at the elegant Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City.
The AIA, America’s oldest organization representing Indian-origin immigrants, was founded on August 20, 1967, shortly after the 1965–66 Immigration Act nullified the restrictive Asian Exclusion Act of 1917. The group’s mission is rooted in democratic values and is driven by the motto “one member, one vote,” uniting individuals across the US under the shared identity of Indian heritage and American citizenship.
In addition to Dr. Sen, other luminaries in the medical world were also honored during the evening. Among them was Dr. Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, Director at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, known for his contributions to cardiovascular medicine. Dr. Latha Chandran, MD—Executive Dean for Education and Policy and the Bernard J. Fogel Founding Chair at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine—was also honored at the event. Completing the esteemed list was Dr. Chetan Sathya, MD, a pediatric trauma surgeon affiliated with Cohen Children’s Medical Center.
The event celebrated the remarkable influence of Indian-American professionals in the US healthcare system, highlighting their innovation, leadership, and service to society. The evening also underscored the AIA’s enduring role in supporting and acknowledging immigrants who continue to shape America’s diverse professional landscape.
From medical breakthroughs to community commitment, the honorees exemplified excellence in their fields—an inspiring testament to the growing legacy of Indian-origin experts in the United States.
