The Indian Navy and the US Navy have begun a five-day bilateral training exercise focused on explosive ordnance disposal at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi. The exercise, scheduled from August 10 to 14, is designed to improve operational coordination and strengthen professional ties between specialist teams from the two navies.
The latest engagement brings together diving and explosive ordnance disposal personnel from India and the United States for an intensive exchange of expertise. The exercise is the eighth edition of the specialized bilateral training program, underscoring the growing depth of cooperation between the two maritime forces.
During the exercise, participating teams will take part in professional exchanges, cross-training activities and equipment demonstrations. They will also conduct practical exercises based on operational scenarios that could arise during maritime missions.
A major focus of the program is the sharing of modern approaches to explosive ordnance disposal. Personnel from both navies are expected to discuss evolving techniques, new technologies and operational practices used to identify and address explosive threats in maritime environments.
The training is intended to give both sides a better understanding of each other’s procedures, equipment and operational capabilities. Greater familiarity between specialist teams can help improve coordination when responding to complex situations involving underwater or maritime explosive hazards.
The exercise also forms part of a broader effort to build interoperability between the Indian and US navies. As maritime security challenges become increasingly complex, the ability of specialized personnel from partner forces to work together effectively has become an important element of bilateral defense cooperation.
India and the United States have maintained a specialized training partnership in salvage operations and explosive ordnance disposal for more than two decades. Their joint exercises in these areas began in 2005 and have provided opportunities for personnel to exchange technical knowledge and develop operational familiarity.
The Kochi exercise builds on that longstanding engagement while expanding cooperation in highly specialized maritime operations. Beyond technical training, such interactions help strengthen professional relationships between naval personnel and create greater confidence in joint operational procedures.
The latest exercise reflects the broader expansion of defense and maritime cooperation between India and the United States. Through recurring training programs, equipment exchanges and practical exercises, both navies continue to improve their ability to coordinate across specialized operational areas and respond effectively to emerging maritime security challenges.
