Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently announced that India’s long-awaited large language model (LLM) is expected to be completed within the next 10 months. This initiative is part of the broader India Artificial Intelligence (AI) Mission, designed to create AI models that incorporate the country’s diverse languages and cultures. The AI project will be supported by the India AI Compute Facility, which has acquired 18,693 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to develop the model, tailored specifically for India’s needs.
Vaishnaw emphasized India’s growing AI capabilities, noting that the country now has 15,000 advanced GPUs, positioning its infrastructure on par with global leaders in AI technology, including ChatGPT, which was trained using 25,000 GPUs.
A shared computing facility equipped with 18,000 GPUs has also been set up to assist startups, researchers, and developers, with around 10,000 GPUs already in operation. Key partners in providing GPUs for this project include Jio Platforms, Tata Communications, Yotta, and NextGen Data Centre. The government has encouraged AI startups to submit proposals, and six developers are already working on AI models, which are expected to be ready within four to six months, with the final deadline set at 10 months.
The Minister expressed optimism, stating that with the efficient use of algorithms, India would soon have a world-class AI model designed to meet the specific needs of the country.
