IIT Madras Global Research Foundation has expanded its international presence by launching its first innovation center in the United States, marking a major step in connecting Indian technology startups with the global innovation ecosystem. The newly established facility is located in Menlo Park, California, at the heart of Silicon Valley, and is backed by an investment of $7.5 million.
The initiative was officially announced during the SelectUSA Investment Summit, a prominent business investment forum in the United States. Out of the total planned investment, nearly $4.5 million will be contributed as a greenfield investment by IITM Global, reinforcing its long-term commitment to research-driven entrepreneurship and technological advancement.
The new center has been designed to function as a deep-tech hub that will support advanced research, startup incubation, and commercialization of innovative technologies. It is expected to create opportunities for Indian startups by helping them connect with investors, industry mentors, corporate partners, and international markets, particularly within the Silicon Valley ecosystem.
Leadership at IIT Madras described the move as an important milestone in taking Indian innovation and research capabilities onto the global stage. Officials noted that the expansion aligns with the institution’s broader vision of building stronger collaborations with international industries, academic institutions, and venture capital networks.
The center will focus heavily on accelerating translational research, enabling promising ideas developed in laboratories to evolve into scalable commercial ventures. It is also expected to support emerging deep-tech companies in areas such as advanced engineering, artificial intelligence, and cutting-edge scientific innovation.
According to senior officials associated with IITM Global, the Menlo Park facility will act as a strategic base for operations in the United States while strengthening India-US collaboration in technology and entrepreneurship. The initiative is also expected to benefit students, researchers, and innovators by giving them direct exposure to global startup ecosystems and international business opportunities.
The leadership team emphasized that the center would not only help startups scale globally but also encourage stronger academic and industrial partnerships between the two countries. By creating direct access to Silicon Valley networks, the project aims to bridge the gap between Indian research institutions and international commercialization platforms.
In addition to the California center, IITM Global also revealed plans to establish another facility on the U.S. East Coast. The second center is expected to further strengthen engagement with financial institutions, universities, policymakers, and innovation-driven organizations across America.
The expansion reflects IIT Madras’ growing ambition to position itself as a global player in deep-tech innovation while creating pathways for Indian startups to compete in international markets.
