The inaugural Icons of Impact Gala hosted by the Global Indian Diaspora Alliance (GLO-INDIA) in New York brought together a prominent group of Indian-American professionals, entrepreneurs, policymakers, academics, and community leaders. Beyond celebrating achievements within the diaspora, the event served as the launchpad for a major initiative designed to strengthen economic cooperation between India and the United States.
Addressing GLO-INDIA’s global network of more than 18,000 members, President H.S. Panaser thanked attendees and supporters for helping make the event a success. A highlight of the evening was a keynote address by India’s Consul General in New York, Ambassador Binaya S. Pradhan, who outlined the growing strength of India-US relations and introduced a new digital platform aimed at accelerating trade opportunities between the two countries.
Speaking before nearly 200 members of the Indian diaspora, Pradhan emphasized the rapid expansion of commercial ties between the two nations. He noted that bilateral trade reached a record $241 billion over the past year, reinforcing the United States’ position as India’s largest trading partner for the fourth consecutive year. He described the current phase of cooperation as one of the strongest periods in the history of the relationship.
The ambassador also highlighted the ambitious “Mission 500” initiative, which seeks to increase bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. As part of this vision, the Consulate General of India in New York unveiled the India-USA Trade Facilitation Portal, a government-supported digital platform designed to make international business engagement easier and more accessible.
The portal aims to directly connect verified Indian exporters, manufacturers, startups, artisans, and service providers with American importers and buyers. By creating trusted business connections, the platform seeks to reduce many of the challenges often faced by small and medium-sized companies when entering overseas markets.
Officials said the portal will offer a range of services, including virtual product showcases, educational webinars on US regulations and market trends, networking opportunities tailored to specific industries, and guidance for businesses looking to establish a presence in the American market. Special support will also be available for MSMEs, women-led enterprises, and artisans participating in India’s One District One Product initiative.
Pradhan also praised the Indian-American community, which numbers nearly four million people, for its role in strengthening ties between the two countries. He encouraged diaspora leaders to mentor entrepreneurs, facilitate business partnerships, and help create opportunities for emerging enterprises.
As India and the United States continue to deepen their economic partnership, the new trade portal is expected to play a significant role in turning long-term trade ambitions into practical opportunities for businesses on both sides.
