External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s recent visit to Rome emphasized strengthening India’s strategic partnerships through a series of significant bilateral meetings. During his participation in the 10th Mediterranean Dialogues Conference (MED) and the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Outreach Session in Fiuggi, he engaged with leaders from the UK, France, Ukraine, Lebanon, and Croatia.
In his meeting with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, the focus was on deepening the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, addressing key areas such as technology, green energy, trade, and mobility. Both leaders also discussed developments in the Indo-Pacific and West Asia. Jaishankar highlighted the steady progress in their relationship on social media platform X.
His discussions with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot revolved around strengthening Indo-French cooperation, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region and addressing global issues like the conflict in Ukraine.
Jaishankar’s dialogue with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha centered on reinforcing bilateral cooperation and advocating for peaceful resolutions. Both leaders recognized the importance of dialogue in resolving the conflict, with Sybiha appreciating India’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Meeting with Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib, Jaishankar explored ways to enhance cooperation, particularly in addressing regional challenges. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to peacekeeping operations in Lebanon and expressed readiness to support international diplomatic initiatives.
In discussions with Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman, Jaishankar underscored India’s dedication to enhancing bilateral ties and fostering collaboration.
During the MED Conference, Jaishankar voiced concern over escalating conflicts in West Asia, emphasizing India’s condemnation of terrorism and the necessity of upholding international humanitarian laws. He also reiterated India’s support for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict and advocated for diplomatic resolutions in Ukraine.
