External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, currently on a five-day visit to Australia from November 3 to November 7, paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Roma Street Parklands in Brisbane. Reflecting on Gandhi’s lasting influence, he shared on social media that Gandhi’s principles of peace and harmony continue to resonate worldwide.
Jaishankar also inaugurated the Consulate General of India in Brisbane, India’s fourth consulate in Australia. He noted that the new consulate will strengthen India’s ties with Queensland, boosting trade, fostering educational collaborations, and serving the Indian diaspora. The event was attended by Queensland Governor Dr. Jeannette Young and other state officials.
In discussions with Governor Young, Jaishankar explored avenues to enhance economic, trade, and investment cooperation with Queensland. Additionally, he extended greetings to the Kingdom of Tonga on their National Day, reaffirming India’s commitment to deepening partnerships with Pacific Island nations.
Later, during an address at the University of Queensland, Jaishankar emphasized the significance of democratic alliances like the QUAD – which includes India, the US, Japan, and Australia. He highlighted the group’s shared commitment to a stable global order and explained that the QUAD’s agenda goes beyond security to encompass a broad range of cooperative efforts aimed at shaping a positive global impact.
Jaishankar’s visit underscores India’s dedication to bolstering relations with Australia and Pacific nations, while strengthening strategic alliances that promote regional stability and shared democratic values.
