Apna Bazar, which describes itself as North America’s largest South Asian supermarket, has opened a new location in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. The store began welcoming customers on October 22, bringing an extensive selection of groceries and specialty food products to Central Massachusetts.
Spanning 70,000 square feet, the supermarket stocks more than 100,000 products. Situated at 539–571 Boston Turnpike, the location offers both South Asian and American grocery items. Customers can also shop at its deli and meat counter and explore a full-service bakery, making the store a destination for a broad range of everyday food needs.
Romy Selhi, the owner and operator of Apna Bazar Farmers Market, had discussed plans for the location in March, explaining that the supermarket was intended to serve a diverse customer base throughout Central Massachusetts. Its anticipated shoppers include Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi communities, along with other American consumers. Selhi had reportedly been considering the property for more than a year before moving forward with the project.
The store’s opening was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local and state representatives. Shrewsbury Select Board members Carlos Garcia and Anand Sharma participated in the event, alongside Doreen Goodrich, representing the office of Massachusetts State Senator Michael Moore. Representatives from Governor Maura Healey’s office were also present.
The opening adds a substantial grocery destination to the area, offering a wide variety of South Asian food products alongside familiar American staples. By catering to multiple communities under one roof, Apna Bazar aims to meet the needs of households seeking diverse ingredients, specialty foods, and convenient shopping options in Central Massachusetts.
