Indian actor Sayani Gupta is preparing to enter the US feature film industry with Arya, an independent drama in which she will play the central character, Arya Sinha. The film marks an important international step for the actor, who has built recognition through acclaimed Indian films and streaming projects.
Gupta will portray a highly disciplined piano instructor who has trained at a prestigious Indian conservatory. Her character accepts an assignment in northern Minnesota despite her reluctance, seeing the opportunity as a way to help revive a struggling school band program while advancing her own professional ambitions in India.
However, Arya’s carefully structured life begins to change as she encounters an unfamiliar and unpredictable environment. The story follows her struggle to adapt, confront personal insecurities and reconsider the way she defines achievement and success.
The movie is being written and directed by Neil Tuli, who is making his feature filmmaking debut. Before moving into cinema, Tuli held strategy positions at Netflix and Illumination, giving him experience in the entertainment industry across both streaming and animation.
Arya is being produced through Tuli’s American Haathi banner in partnership with Pallavi and Keertana Sastry of Adda G Productions. Gupta is also attached to the project as an executive producer, giving her a role behind the camera in addition to leading the film.
The actor has previously earned attention for performances that explore complex social and personal themes. Her breakthrough came with Shonali Bose’s Margarita with a Straw, in which she played a blind Pakistani-Bangladeshi queer student activist. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014 and helped establish Gupta as a performer capable of taking on unconventional roles.
She later appeared in projects including Parched and The Hungry, both of which also received screenings at TIFF. Gupta was additionally nominated for an International Indian Film Academy Award for her performance in Article 15.
Her work has extended across films, television and streaming productions, with several of her projects reaching international audiences. Margarita with a Straw is currently available on Netflix.
More recently, Gupta appeared in filmmaker Sheetal Menon’s Duet, which features Sidhant Gupta in the lead role.
With Arya, Gupta is taking on a new creative challenge in the US independent film space. The project brings together Indian talent and American filmmaking while centering on a character navigating cultural adjustment, professional pressure and personal transformation.
