Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held discussions with Spain’s Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo in Madrid on Monday, focusing on expanding economic cooperation and strengthening business relations between India and Spain. The meeting marked the beginning of Goyal’s official engagements during his three-nation European visit.
Following the talks, Goyal highlighted that both countries explored opportunities to enhance their economic partnership through increased trade, investment, and technology collaboration. Discussions covered key sectors including renewable energy, green hydrogen, advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, infrastructure development, and innovation.
The two ministers also exchanged views on the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and discussed ways to increase commercial engagement between India and Spain. The talks come as India and the EU continue efforts toward advancing the trade agreement and creating new opportunities for businesses on both sides.
Goyal’s visit to Spain, Belgium, and Finland from July 13 to July 17 is aimed at strengthening India’s economic partnerships across Europe. The high-level delegation includes business representatives and focuses on promoting trade, investment opportunities, technological cooperation, sustainability, and innovation.
During his stay in Spain, Goyal is scheduled to meet other senior government officials, including Industry and Tourism Minister Jordi Hereu Boher and Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation Minister Jose Manuel Albares Bueno. He will also lead an India-Spain Business Roundtable involving major Spanish companies and industry groups to highlight investment opportunities in India.
The discussions are expected to encourage stronger business-to-business partnerships and create new avenues for collaboration across multiple industries. Both nations are looking to deepen economic links by leveraging opportunities in emerging technologies, clean energy, and industrial development.
India-Spain relations have gained momentum in recent years, with leaders from both countries emphasizing broader cooperation. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Spanish President Pedro Sanchez in New Delhi, where they discussed expanding collaboration in areas such as trade, economy, healthcare, digital technology, innovation, climate action, and education.
During that meeting, Modi appreciated Spain’s continued support for strengthening India-European Union relations. The latest discussions between officials reflect both countries’ shared interest in building a stronger economic partnership and creating long-term opportunities for businesses and industries.
