Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached a landmark political milestone on Wednesday by becoming the longest-serving Prime Minister in India since the Constitution came into effect. The achievement represents a defining moment in the country’s democratic history and prompted the Prime Minister to reflect on the principles he believes are central to effective governance and leadership.
Having first assumed office on May 26, 2014, Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days as Prime Minister, surpassing the previous record held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who served 4,398 uninterrupted days following the country’s first general elections in 1952. Marking the occasion through a message on social media, Modi said, “Public service is the greatest measure of good governance,” emphasizing that leaders earn the trust of citizens only through humility, dedication, and a strong sense of duty.
The Prime Minister also invoked ancient Indian wisdom by sharing a Sanskrit verse highlighting the virtues of compassionate leadership. Reflecting on the responsibilities of those in power, he noted that “one who is devoted by nature, ever intent on the welfare of his subjects… attains the highest glory,” underlining the importance of governing with humility and prioritizing the well-being of the people.
Senior leaders within the National Democratic Alliance welcomed the milestone with messages of appreciation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah described the past 12 years as a period marked by renewed national pride, cultural resurgence, and efforts to move beyond outdated mindsets that restricted India’s aspirations.
In an opinion piece, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath observed that the Prime Minister had offered the country more than government initiatives. According to him, Modi had provided “a clear goal, a broad vision, and a national resolve filled with confidence.” He added that the occasion was not simply about setting records but about recognizing the transformation that has strengthened public faith in India’s capabilities and future potential.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised Modi as a “tireless Karmayogi” guided by the principle of “Nation First.” He stated that the Prime Minister’s tenure has been defined by unwavering dedication to national development, public welfare, and transformative leadership that has contributed to India’s progress across multiple sectors.
The milestone also attracted international recognition. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim acknowledged Modi’s contribution to India’s rise on the global stage, while US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor remarked, “This achievement is a powerful testament to decades of dedicated public service and leadership.” He extended his best wishes to the Prime Minister on the historic occasion.
As congratulatory messages poured in from leaders in India and around the world, Modi’s record-setting tenure emerged as more than a numerical achievement.
