Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni extended her congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he became India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, using the occasion to emphasize the strengthening relationship between India and Italy following their recent diplomatic engagement in Rome.
In a post on social media platform X, Meloni wrote, “Congratulations to @narendramodi who today becomes the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in the history of India.” She added that recent meetings in Rome were productive and highlighted the launch of a Special Strategic Partnership between the two nations aimed at expanding future cooperation. She further stated, “It has been a pleasure to meet again in Rome in recent weeks and to launch together a Special Strategic Partnership that looks to the future to create new opportunities for our Nations and our peoples.”
Her message reflected growing India–Italy relations, with both sides working to strengthen collaboration in trade, innovation, and global strategic engagement. The congratulatory note came amid widespread international recognition of Modi’s record-breaking tenure, which surpassed the long-standing record held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Modi achieved the milestone on Wednesday after completing 4,399 consecutive days in office, beginning his tenure on May 26, 2014. He was re-elected in 2019 and again in 2024, marking one of the longest uninterrupted democratic leadership spans in India’s political history.
Several global leaders also joined in extending congratulations. Former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison called Modi a statesman who has transformed India’s global standing. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praised his years of dedicated public service, stating his leadership has advanced India’s development and international influence.
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the milestone reflected the trust of Indian voters across three mandates, while former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih described it as “a historic milestone that reflects the enduring trust and confidence the people of India have placed in Prime Minister Modi.”
Kenyan President William Ruto also remarked that Modi’s journey demonstrated the confidence reposed in his leadership, and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake extended his greetings on the achievement.
