Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to the victims and survivors of the 1947 Partition as India observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. The occasion was marked by reflections on the immense suffering, displacement, and loss experienced by millions during one of the most traumatic periods in the country’s modern history.
In a message shared on social media, Modi remembered families who were separated, people who lost loved ones, and communities that were forced to leave their homes. He also highlighted the resilience of those who faced the upheaval and managed to rebuild their lives despite starting over with very little.
The Prime Minister said the experiences of Partition survivors demonstrate the strength of the human spirit. Their ability to overcome hardship and contribute to the country’s development, he noted, remains an important part of India’s history.
Modi also used the occasion to emphasize the importance of maintaining social harmony and brotherhood. He called for a renewed commitment to national unity and encouraged citizens to work collectively toward the goal of building a developed India.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also commemorated the day, remembering those who lost their lives and those who were displaced during Partition. He described the events surrounding August 14, 1947, as one of the darkest chapters in history and paid tribute to people who endured violence, separation, and the loss of their homes and possessions.
Shah said the observance is intended to keep memories of Partition alive, particularly among younger generations. He emphasized the importance of learning from the tragedy and ensuring that forces seeking to create divisions do not undermine national unity.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also paid tribute to those affected by Partition. He stressed that the 1947 division went beyond the creation of new political boundaries, as countless families experienced the loss of relationships, homes, dreams, and emotional connections.
Adityanath said remembering the tragedy should encourage people to place the unity and integrity of the nation above differences. He also honored the innocent people who lost their lives and said their memories should inspire efforts to build a stronger and united India.
Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is observed annually on August 14 to remember the suffering associated with the Partition of India. The division triggered one of the largest population movements in modern history, with millions crossing newly established borders amid widespread violence and upheaval.
The day serves as an opportunity to remember those affected while emphasizing the importance of unity, peace, and social harmony for future generations.
