ndia has announced a comprehensive set of reforms aimed at modernizing the country’s measurement infrastructure and strengthening its legal metrology framework on the occasion of World Metrology Day 2026. The Department of Consumer Affairs stated that the new initiatives are designed to improve transparency, precision, and operational efficiency in measurement systems used across industries, trade networks, and public services.
Among the major reforms introduced is the wider expansion of digital governance through the eMaap Portal, which is expected to streamline administrative processes and improve regulatory compliance nationwide. Authorities also highlighted efforts to enhance certification and verification systems to ensure more reliable measurement standards across multiple sectors.
Another important development under the reform package is the advancement of the “One Nation, One Time” initiative. The project seeks to establish a synchronized and highly accurate national timekeeping system across India, helping create consistency in digital operations, communication networks, infrastructure management, and industrial activities.
Government officials emphasized that legal metrology plays a vital role in maintaining fair trade practices and safeguarding consumer rights. Accurate measurements are considered essential for ensuring trust between businesses and consumers while also supporting smoother commercial operations and improving the overall ease of doing business in the country.
The reforms are also part of India’s broader strategy to align its standards and measurement ecosystem with international best practices. Officials noted that India has continued strengthening its capabilities in measurement science and certification systems, including achieving recognition under the framework of the International Organization of Legal Metrology.
Precise and standardized measurement systems are increasingly important across sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, telecommunications, energy, infrastructure, and digital services. In these industries, even minor inaccuracies can affect product quality, operational safety, efficiency, and customer confidence.
The government believes that integrating modern technologies and digital platforms into the metrology ecosystem will reduce administrative delays, simplify compliance procedures, and support faster trade processes. These improvements are also expected to strengthen India’s position in international markets as global industries increasingly rely on standardized systems and quality assurance mechanisms.
As India continues expanding its manufacturing capabilities and pursuing long-term economic growth goals, officials stressed that a reliable and technologically advanced measurement infrastructure will remain a key pillar supporting innovation, industrial development, consumer protection, and global competitiveness.
