The Government of India has appointed senior Indian Foreign Service officer Vikram K Doraiswami as the country’s next Ambassador to China. The announcement was made by the Ministry of External Affairs, confirming that the experienced diplomat will take up the assignment shortly.
At present, Doraiswami is serving as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. His new posting comes at a sensitive time, as India and China continue efforts to stabilize and improve bilateral relations following tensions that escalated after the 2020 Galwan Valley clash in eastern Ladakh.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Doraiswami, a 1992-batch IFS officer, brings decades of extensive diplomatic experience across multiple regions and strategic roles. He holds a master’s degree in history from Delhi University and briefly worked in journalism before joining the Indian Foreign Service.
Early in his career, he was posted to Hong Kong in 1994 as Third Secretary, where he also studied Chinese language at the New Asia Yale-in-Asia Language School. He later served in Beijing, gaining valuable on-ground experience in China during a four-year tenure that strengthened his regional expertise.
Over the years, he has held several important positions within the Ministry of External Affairs, including Deputy Chief of Protocol and responsibilities across divisions handling South Asia, the Americas, and other strategic regions. He has also served in the Prime Minister’s Office, giving him exposure to high-level policy coordination.
His diplomatic career includes ambassadorial assignments in Uzbekistan and the Republic of Korea, along with senior roles managing India’s engagements with Bangladesh and Myanmar. Between 2020 and 2022, he served as High Commissioner to Bangladesh before being appointed to his current position in the United Kingdom.
Fluent in multiple languages including Mandarin, French, and Korean, Doraiswami is considered a highly experienced diplomat with strong regional expertise in Asia. His multilingual abilities and long tenure in key postings are expected to support India’s diplomatic engagement in Beijing.
The appointment reflects India’s continued strategy of placing seasoned diplomats in sensitive international postings, especially as New Delhi and Beijing work toward rebuilding trust, managing border-related issues, and gradually restoring stable diplomatic communication after years of strained relations.
