Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Spanish President Pedro Sánchez on Wednesday at Hyderabad House for bilateral talks aimed at strengthening cooperation in trade, economy, digital technology, innovation, healthcare, climate action, and education. The discussions coincided with the India AI Impact Summit 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, providing a strategic platform for technology-driven collaboration.
President Sánchez, who arrived in India earlier in the day, was welcomed at the airport by Minister of State for Skills Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Singh. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that the leaders explored a wide-ranging agenda to deepen the India–Spain partnership, including trade expansion, economic collaboration, digital transformation, innovation, healthcare, climate initiatives, and education. PM Modi also acknowledged Spain’s ongoing support for robust India–European Union relations.
Ahead of his meeting with the Prime Minister, President Sánchez addressed the Spain–India CEO Forum, emphasizing Spain’s investment potential and encouraging stronger business engagement with Indian industry leaders. On social media, he described Spain as a strategic partner providing opportunities for growth, stability, talent, and technological innovation.
India and Spain have maintained diplomatic relations since 1956, with bilateral ties expanding steadily across political, economic, and cultural domains. President Sánchez made an official visit in October 2024, marking his first trip to India and the first by a Spanish head of government in 18 years. PM Modi previously visited Spain in May 2017. The leaders have also met on the sidelines of G20 Summits in 2018 and 2021, and held a phone conversation in February 2023 to reaffirm their commitment to enhancing bilateral ties.
The current visit takes place during the India-Spain Dual Year of Culture, Tourism, and AI, adding momentum to cross-sector collaboration. The India AI Impact Summit 2026, the first global AI summit hosted in the Global South, has drawn participants from over 110 countries and 30 international organizations, including approximately 20 heads of state or government and nearly 45 ministers, reflecting India’s growing role in global AI and technology leadership.
