India’s High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Rajeev Kumar, met Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and advancing cooperation across key sectors.
The meeting focused on expanding areas of mutual interest and reinforcing the growing partnership between the two countries. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening diplomatic engagement and enhancing collaboration in development, security and people-to-people exchanges.
The engagement builds on the momentum generated by recent high-level interactions between the two nations. India has steadily expanded its outreach to Pacific Island countries, positioning Papua New Guinea as a key partner in the region.
Earlier engagements between the two countries highlighted shared priorities in development partnership, capacity building and defence cooperation. India has consistently conveyed its support for Papua New Guinea’s national development goals and regional aspirations.
Bilateral ties received a major boost following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s landmark visit to Papua New Guinea, during which both sides committed to strengthening cooperation under the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) framework. The platform, launched to enhance India’s engagement with Pacific Island nations, continues to serve as a cornerstone of India’s Indo-Pacific outreach.
Subsequent high-level visits further reinforced diplomatic and cultural ties, with leaders from both countries reiterating their shared commitment to expanding strategic engagement and strengthening people-to-people connections.
The latest meeting between the Indian envoy and Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister underscores the sustained diplomatic efforts aimed at elevating bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation across political, economic and regional dimensions.
