Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Malaysia from February 7-8, responding to an invitation from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the Ministry of External Affairs announced. This will mark PM Modi’s third official visit to Malaysia and his first since India and Malaysia upgraded their relationship to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” in August 2024.
During the visit, PM Modi will engage in bilateral talks with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and interact with members of the Indian community, as well as leading industry and business representatives. The 10th India-Malaysia CEO Forum is also scheduled to coincide with the visit, providing a platform to strengthen commercial and investment ties.
The MEA highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and civilisational links between India and Malaysia, reinforced by the presence of the 2.9 million-strong Indian diaspora—the third largest globally. The upcoming visit aims to review the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation, covering trade, investment, defence, security, maritime collaboration, digital and financial technology, energy, healthcare, education, culture, tourism, and people-to-people engagement. Both leaders will also set the roadmap for future initiatives that bring mutual benefit.
Last October, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Haji Hasan during the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, discussing progress in bilateral cooperation and the situation in Myanmar. Malaysia hosted the 47th ASEAN Summit under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” where EAM Jaishankar represented PM Modi at the 20th East Asia Summit.
Earlier, during the 22nd India-ASEAN Summit, PM Modi highlighted the 21st century as the era of India and ASEAN, reinforcing historical and civilisational bonds. He congratulated Timor-Leste on becoming ASEAN’s 11th member and pledged India’s support for its human development initiatives. Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to ASEAN unity, centrality, and the Indo-Pacific outlook while urging an expedited review of the ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement to boost trade and regional resilience.
The Prime Minister also condemned terrorism as a global threat and called for unified international action. In line with Malaysia’s chairmanship theme of inclusivity and sustainability, he unveiled initiatives supporting the ASEAN-India Plan of Action (2026-2030), strengthening economic, cultural, and strategic engagement across the region.
This visit underscores India’s intent to deepen multi-dimensional cooperation with Malaysia and the broader ASEAN bloc while highlighting the importance of people-to-people, business, and strategic partnerships for regional growth and stability.
